Overview of Yoga
Yoga is an ancient system of healing developed in India over three thousand years ago. Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word "Yug," which means to yoke or to join. The aim of yoga is to unite the mind, body and soul.
Hatha Yoga deals with the physical body. In Sanskrit language, "Ha" means sun and "Tha" means moon. Hatha Yoga utilizes a series of physical postures or "Asanas" to promote health and well being and to achieve a state of balance.
Many styles of Hatha Yoga have been trademarked with names such as Kripalu, Vinyasa, Power, Bikram, etc. Each has inherent health benefits. However, an ideal Hatha Yoga practice will be tailored to the health needs of the individual student.
How can Hatha Yoga help me?
Hatha yoga supports healthy functioning of the mind and the body. The physical postures work to lengthen the spine, strengthen the bones and muscles, and tone the organs to promote healthy functioning of the body systems and to promote mental clarity. Hatha Yoga seeks to align the physical body and restore the innate sense of balance and equanimity.
